If you’re working in a management role in a children’s home right now, you know that the needs of the children themselves should always come first. But you probably know that, all too often, the need to make a profit comes before the people you’re supposed to be caring for. Not here. Bring your experience, ambition and commitment to vulnerable children to us, and rest assured that every single decision you make will be about the children and young people in our care. When we say it’s all about the care, we really mean it.

About the role

In a way, it’s simple: manage a team of around fourteen residential childcare workers and other care professionals so that the needs of the between two and four children at your home get the care, support and love they need.

Of course, it’s much more complicated than that. You’ll need to know how to inspire and get the most from your team, so that they succeed personally and professionally. You’ll be responsible for all aspects of the home, the property, vehicles, repairs, etc, and will have a budget of around £700,000 per year.

You’ll report to – and be supported by – the Service Manager for Residential Services, and will meet all regulatory expectations and duties as outlined in the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, including preparation for Ofsted visits and reports. Indeed, we’ll expect you to achieve at least a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted from their first inspection.

About our residential children’s homes

Shropshire Council runs six children’s residential homes across the county. They’re great places for children to live – and for you to work. Ofsted consistently rate our homes ‘outstanding’ and ‘good’ – and that’s all down to our brilliant, hard-working and friendly teams, who always go the extra mile to help vulnerable children and young people get the love, support and care they need. Each home only houses two, three or four children at any one time, and is well-staffed. The long-term aim is to support children into foster care, or to return to their families.

About you

This is a serious leadership role. To succeed here, you must have a Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare / Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce (or equivalent), plus a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Children and Young People’s Residential Management). If not complete, this must be finished within three years of starting work with us.

It goes without saying that you’re an inspirational leader and have extensive experience of working with children in a residential setting, almost certainly at management level. It’s essential that you understand relevant legislation, including Residential Child Care and Looked After Children, e.g. Children’s Home Regulations and Quality Standards 2015, Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, Care Matters 2006, and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018. You’ll also understand Ofsted regulations and be able to lead and prepare for inspections.

About the benefits

This is a high-level role and we’ll reward you accordingly. The salary is really competitive, but more than that, you’ll enjoy a whole range of excellent benefits that only we can offer you. Plus, you will always have the full support of the Service Manager and our other residential and registered managers – we’re a close-knit team who look out for one another.

  • Generous annual leave starting at 28 days, increasing with service to 33 days (pro rata for part time)
  • Support towards professional qualifications
  • Access to retail discounts and salary sacrifice schemes
  • Employer contribution Pension Scheme
  • Parental and carer supportive policies
  • Flexible and hybrid working opportunities
  • Access to counselling and occupational health services

Before you apply, you MUST:

  • Have a full UK driving licence (with ability to drive a vehicle with manual transmission) and have a car available for work
  • Have the right to work in the UK – The Local Authority do not currently offer sponsorship
  • Show a full employment history
  • Be physically and emotionally able to undertake Restrictive Physical Interventions with young people where significant risk is presented
  • Be able to work within all Shropshire Council’s Residential Children’s Homes. Although you’ll be based at one home, you may be required to work at other homes as and when
  • Have a full DBS check before you start work with children’s residential services
  • Have a Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare / Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce (or equivalent).
